6 Tips for Productive Writing at Home

May 06, 2020 (Last Updated February 19, 2021)

Marcy G.

All of us are spending most of our time at home these days. For some, it may be an adjustment to your normal writing routine. We’ve outlined some tips for being a productive writer while staying at home:

Establish a routine:

Schedule blocks of time in your day dedicated to writing. . It may take some time to establish a routine that works for you, but take note of what time of day you feel most productive in your writing and build your routine around that. Set time aside for brainstorming and reviewing your work as well.

Start with a prompt:

Writing prompts are a great way to get warmed up and primed for a productive day of writing. This simple activity will wake up your mind critically and creatively. We have been posting prompts every weekday at 9am EST on our Facebook if you need some inspiration!

Set writing goals:

Setting goals will help prioritize your writing schedule and give you accountability for staying on top of your book. Even if you don’t always meet these benchmarks, you will at least have a solid idea of where you’re at in your progress. Shorter deadlines and goals may be more encouraging and effective than long-term ones, simply because you don’t have to wait to feel a larger sense of accomplishment in your progress. If this feels stressful to you, when you sit down to write, have a goal in mind for that session then go from there!

Make time for reading:

Now is a great time to read all of those books sitting on our shelves that we haven’t had time to read yet! Reading is proven to be healthy for your own writing. You are writing something that others are going to consciously choose to read, so why would you not take the time to read avidly yourself? Reading can help inspire new ideas and allow for better self-critique of our own writing.

Create a positive writing environment:

Take some time to curate a space that you can feel comfortable and successful in. This is especially important if you don’t have a home office or prefer going somewhere public for a different atmosphere.

Practice self-care:

Remember to take a deep breath and don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t reach your writing goals for the day. Do something just for you like gardening, crafting, or taking a walk. Simply introducing a morning or mid-day walk can help get your blood flowing, increasing the oxygen to your brain.  Your mind needs tools to perform too.  Walking will help stimulate brain activity, putting you in a better position to focus and be creative. No matter what the activity is, take breaks and do something to relax.
