We continue our series on “How to Be a Writer” with the topic of daily writing habits. One of the hardest parts of writing is finding the time to sit down and write. If writing is not your primary job, it can be difficult to reach daily writing goals. It’s also difficult to have a writing rhythm right away, so establishing daily, or even weekly, writing habits is essential for productivity, and ultimately, your self-esteem as a writer, overall.
In the past, we have covered writing habits and how they relate to conquering writer’s block and establishing a writing schedule. But this time, we’re going to dive a little deeper and offer advice for all types of writing schedules.
Developing daily writing habits is essential for becoming a proficient writer. Here are some tips to help you establish and maintain a productive writing routine:
Start Small
If you're new to daily writing, begin with manageable writing sessions, such as 15 or 30 minutes a day, and gradually increase the duration as you build your stamina.
Set Specific Goals
Define clear, achievable writing goals for each day. These goals could be based on word count, time spent writing, or completing specific tasks such as drafting a chapter or editing a section. If you work full-time, decide if you are a better writer bright and early in the morning, or late at night. Yes, it’s a long day ahead, but if you’re committed to writing, then finding time is crucial. If establishing a writing schedule during the work week is too difficult, take advantage of free time on the weekend and dedicate a few hours where you can.
Create a Writing Schedule
Allocate a specific time each day for writing and stick to it. Whether it's early in the morning, during lunch breaks, or in the evening, consistency is key. Life happens and things change, so if you must stray from your set schedule, don’ get down on yourself. Yes, it can affect your overall writing rhythm, but if you’re making the time to write, you’re doing it right.
Find Your Writing Environment
Identify a quiet and comfortable space where you can focus and minimize distractions. It could be a home office, a local library, or a cozy corner in your home. If you like some noise in the background while you write, maybe a busier café environment is for you to get that ambient sound – whatever works for you! The reason it’s important to establish an environment is because once you sit down in your designated place, your brain knows it’s time to start writing.
Set Rewards
Establish incentives for meeting your daily writing goals, such as treating yourself to something enjoyable. This can help with personal accountability, and who doesn’t love a treat? Sometimes, fitting in writing time is just not going to happen, so making up that time and having a productive day of writing, is reason enough to feel proud of yourself, even if it means you’ve strayed from a set writing schedule.
Experiment with Writing Prompts
If you're struggling to find inspiration, try using writing prompts to jumpstart your creativity. Websites, books, or apps dedicated to writing prompts can provide endless ideas for your daily writing sessions. Writing prompts are a great way to start your writing for the day. Answer a prompt, then dive into your own material.
Embrace Freewriting
Allow yourself to write without inhibition or judgment. Freewriting involves writing continuously for a set period, focusing on generating ideas rather than perfecting grammar or structure.
Prioritize Revision
While daily writing focuses on generating content, don't neglect the importance of revision and proofreading. Set aside time to review and refine your work, ensuring clarity, coherence, and effectiveness. Every writer has a different way they revise. Some writers will revise as they write, or they will revise by chapter or section. Some writers will wait until they have completed their writing project, then go back and revise everything.
Seek Accountability Partners
Share your writing goals with a friend, family member, or fellow writer who can provide support and hold you accountable for sticking to your daily writing habits.
Stay Flexible
Be open to adjusting your writing routine as needed. Life may present unexpected challenges, so be willing to adapt your schedule while maintaining a commitment to regular writing practice. Pay attention to writing days that have been especially productive – what was your mood going in? Where were you writing? What time was it? Did you do anything differently that day?
By implementing these strategies and making writing a consistent part of your daily routine, you can develop the habits necessary to improve your skills and achieve your writing goals. Everyone works at their own pace, so give yourself grace while navigating what works for you.
